Phase 1 of Building

Before

The farm flourished under 12 years of permaculture planting and had grown verdant. As with all things there is a positive and a negative side. Beautiful lush green foliage but not enough light. Remedy , some trees must be removed.

The Plan

The Staircase

The construction of the staircase made from caña india.

This material "Caña india" is often used here in Latinamerica and is in
the bamboo family.

Foundation

All of the supporting sub-structure is made of Macano. This wood is extremely dense and imprevious to insect damage. Another incredible feature of Macano, is after it has been planted in the soil it will produce roots and continue to live. But most importantly, it will only grow from where it was cut. This allows a super strong foundation and the critical measurements of the Y will remain unchanged.

Orangután and Buenropas cutting and setting a center post

Using only the simplest tools and years of experience the supporting structure moves forward. All horizontal beams will be made from a hard wood called Amarillo. These poles were repurposed from the “opening of the canopy” from the Food Forest.

INCREDIBLE!!

The entire crew:
Orangután, Velocidad, James Brown, Buenropas, and Dicenada work as one.
This six hundred pound 32 ft. Amarillo
tree is erected using only ropes an levers.

This Amarillo tree will be the center of the 2 story tree house.

A very interesting  timelapse sequence of half a work day.

Menguante = Waning Quarter of the moon
and its influence on plants.

As we know, the moon influences the movement of water with its gravitational pull. Liquids inside of plants move differently depending on the phases of the moon. During the Menguante, the greatest concentration of sap moves directly to the roots. That is why, it is the best time to cut. This “time honored practice” minimizes insect damage. We employed this process for the cutting our bamboo. Blessed with good fortune, the cutting was in the exact middle of the Menguante.

We will also use preservatives on the bamboo and all other woods, to diminish the impact of insects and decomposition. The results are splendid and long lasting.

This stand of bamboo is between 50 and 60 ft. tall.

A photo for perspective

Each Bamboo needed to be hand carried up a steep embankment.

From the top of the embankment each pole had to be hand carried to the road.

Stacked bamboo soon to be transported.

Lengths of bamboo transported from harvest site to a temporary storage site.
